Can Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Improve Grain Iron Concentration of Agro-Biofortified Crops in Zimbabwe?

چکیده

Improving iron (Fe) concentration in staple grain crops could help reduce Fe-deficiency anaemia communities dependent on plant-based diets. Co-application of nitrogen (N) and zinc (Zn) fertilizers has been reported to improve both yield Zn smallholder farming systems. This study was conducted determine if similar effects are observed for Fe concentration. Field experiments were two years, contrasting agro-ecologies Zimbabwe, maize (Zea mays L.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp) finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.) “seed pools”. The pools” collected during previous farmer surveys represent “high” “low” concentrations. All plots received foliar Fe-ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) fertilizer one seven N treatments, representing mineral or organic sources, combinations thereof. Higher yields larger treatments. Grain increased according species: < but varied widely treatment. Significant N-form the low pool”, which application a greater extent than other forms, not species. Whilst good soil fertility management is essential quality, less consistent previously Zn.

Assessment Iron Application to Improve Agro-Morphological Traits and Bio-Fortification of Grain Wheat Grown in Different Nitrogen Conditions

Bio-fortification of food crops is a cost-effective and sustainable agricultural strategy to decrease malnutrition arising from micronutrients deficiencies. Accordingly, the pot experiments have been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of various foliar-applied iron (Fe) fertilizers in increasing agro-morphological traits and grain micronutrients concentrations of bread wheat plants unde...

Association of Increased Grain Iron and Zinc Concentrations with Agro-morphological Traits of Biofortified Rice

Biofortification of rice (Oryza sativa L.) with micronutrients is widely recognized as a sustainable strategy to alleviate human iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) deficiencies in developing countries where rice is the staple food. Constitutive overexpression of the rice nicotianamine synthase (OsNAS) genes has been successfully implemented to increase Fe and Zn concentrations in unpolished and polished r...

Estimating Grain and Straw Nitrogen Concentration in Grain Crops Based on Aboveground Nitrogen Concentration and Harvest Index

Simulating grain (Ng) and straw (Ns) nitrogen (N) concentration is of paramount importance in cropping systems simulation models. In this paper we present a simple model to partition N between grain and straw at harvest for barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench). The principle of the model is to partition the abovegro...

Effect of Different Amounts of Nitrogen Fertilizer on Grain Yield of Forage Corn Cultivars in Isfahan

To evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer amounts on grain yield of forage corn in 2012, a pilot was implemented in Islamic Azad University Agricultural Research Station, Isfahan, as a split plot in a randomized complete block design. Main plots consisted of four levels: control (no fertilization ) , 50 , 100 and 150 kg per ha nitrogen from urea source and subplots , including several varie...

Iron-biofortified staple food crops for improving iron status: a review of the current evidence

Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency globally and represents a major threat to public health. Biofortification, the process of enhancing micronutrient content and bioavailability in staple crops, represents an exciting sustainable food-based strategy to combat and prevent iron deficiency, particularly in resource-limited settings. In this review, we examine the evidence t...
